Plums, alu bukhara or alucha in Hindi and many other Indian languages, belongs to the family of Prune family and are believed to have originated in Central Asia. The juicy and succulent fruit combines sweet and sour taste with an almost irresistible eye appeal. It is considered a rich source of vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber. The dark, rich color of plums makes them an ideal ingredient for jams, jellies and chutneys. Chutney is literally translated as a substance that can be licked. A wide variety of chutneys are prepared in India using fruits and vegetables as base adding myriad seasonings and spices. These are believed to have therapeutic properties. The British succumbed to the charms of chutney and it was during the period of colonial rule that chutney evolved further.
